AP Drawing- Concentration
My concentration is the expression of emotion and athleticism through portraiture. My drawings were originally motivated by a desire to capture emotion and drama. Over time, my drawings became reflections of my athletic experiences. The action-oriented drawings convey the athleticism of a central figure to provide a sense of success and achievement. In other drawings I focused on portraiture to echo the dramatic anticipation of sports. I stressed the rendering on grime and reflected lights to emphasize sports’ fast pace. I highlighted the painstaking grit in the figures faces and expressions, exaggerating the dark values to bring the audience’s focus to the figure’s face. I included details such as dirt-covered pants and a soiled body of the baseball athlete to provide evidence of hard-work and determination in the exhausted figure. I also contrasted the dull background with warm and earthy orange tones to accentuate the figure’s form. I then implemented gestural pieces to embody the rapid movement of sports. In my gestures, I directed my focus on depicting the varying positions to balance the figurative portraiture with the progression of the athletes motion. Even team sports may feel individual in the moment– a sole battle for success. These feelings are captured within the figure’s rendering and layering of separate aspects in the background with progressively less detail.
